When mid-year goals have not yet been attained, many organizations opt for a major course change; however, a substantial shift in work may not be the most effective response. According to the Relay Graduate School of Education, a reset, a “focused initiative that has a meaningful impact in a short period of time” may be a more effective response.
Instead of a complete pivot, consider what can be accomplished ‘right now’ within your locus of control. To reset,
1. Prioritize needs and select one main issue that can addressed in a short period of time.
2. Define and clarify your vision with specific outcomes.
3. Acknowledge current resources and determine key actions.
4. Create a short-term plan for impact with your team.
5. Communicate the plan to all stakeholders.
A key ingredient to the reset process is a leader who is pragmatic and hopeful, believing in the work that is essential to the organization’s success.
